what a pitiful thanksgiving sale apple provided.

    nothing to wow about.

    You are correct!

I should go back to the Apple store, and give them $101 + the extra tax associated (making it $107.56) for the MacBook I just bought. Only because this sale is lame!

    I think it's all cool now. :)

That's what Microsoft does. Copy Apple and make the copy so bad that Apple can't quite sue them. MS has been doing that for DECADES.
That's why I call MS "The Worlds Biggest Out-Of-Focus Copying Machine".

It's not good for consumers in the long run. We get stuck with expensive and inferior copies of Apple products. Yuck.

A Microsoft App Store is almost too hilarious a concept to think about. Thinking about it might make good therapy for depression but could have side effects related to excessive laughter.
If they're very lucky it will be Zune2.

MS has been focusing on Enterprise features? Odd. Our MS based computers at work are actually worse to use than Windows computers at home. Perhaps our IT guys are just being cruel?

    Have Fun.
    Keri

MS knows 5 things, more or less:

    1) How to extend boredom and bad software into the enterprise
    2) How to copy (poorly)
    3) Office suite rehashes
    4) Xbox
    5) How to ride the coattails of their universal licensing racket

For quite a long time now, the only thing MS has had left is empty talk. Lip service and blustery denial, i.e., tablets are a fad, Apple rounding errors, etc. All of these are excuses in the face of continued, embarrassing criticism. MS is all about excuses. Ever notice that? Whenever it's question period Ballmer always has an answer - even if it sounds batshit insane. Of course, excuses don't put insanely great products into consumers' hands (unless it's substandard copies three years later!) But that's OK. MS wil "get it right" eventually. We keep hearing that. Just give them time. Meanwhile Apple, at a fraction of the cost, redefines entire markets overnight. It's almost like business as usual at Apple: redefine markets and create new ones. Lead the way forward. So in other words: no waste. Money spent wisely. Which leads me to the next point . . .

Did you know that Microsoft has outspent Apple roughly 8-1 in R&D over the last decade? Yup. 8 to freaking 1.

And in that time - a decade, Apple has produced Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, lots of groundbreaking Mac models (multiple iMac versions, the iBooks, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, MacBook Air, Power Macs, etc.), iPod, popularized Podcasting, iTunes, iTunes Store, iPhone, iOS, Apple TV, the App Store, Mac App Store, and, of course their current game-changer: the iPad.

Microsoft, on the other hand, for 8x the money, has come up with: another back-asswards Mac OS X clone - a Windows rehash that they're trying to shoehorn onto tablets with varying degrees of failure, some bloated Office retreads, the Zune, Kin, Bing, and Windows Phone 2007. If it wasn’t for the Sony-inspired Xbox (Red Ring of Death included) and a Nintendo-inspired Xbox controller, Microsoft would have nothing but a string of failures to show for roughly 80 billion dollars. The ratio of R&D to revenue for both companies couldn’t be more telling. Of course, they put a lot of R&D into their Enterprise software. Which doesn't function any better today than it has years ago. We're still on XPee at work. So, of course it's all useless to us. It's hard to get excited about Exchange and Outlook.

That's right. $80 billion for a PlayStation clone, an accessory to make it work like a Wii, an also-ran search engine, and what’s left of Nokia.

Is it more funny than sad? I'm not sure.

Any random person picked off the street could have run Microsoft better during the last decade. Mind you, not that a lot of other CEOs are any brighter (here's lookin' at ya, Acer!)

Microsoft does two things really well, though: Retarded product names and waste. Add these to the other five above. The list still doesn't look any better.

    Cheers

OK, i dont know if this is a problem, but the URL of the keynote itself happens to contain a spoiler. Could be an issue.

Actually someone at Apple took the spoiler off the keynote URL page:

    So, it's not here anymore:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf07/

But it is everywhere else on the site.

    Very nice of them.

In other words, it is now more fair to everyone because you just need to be in the App Store rather than having to submit your app specifically to be considered.

In other words, it's less fair to everyone, because you have to fork over $0.30 of every $1.00 you make to Apple in order to be part of the Mac App store just to be in the running for the design award.

It's going to be interesting to see if open-source products win any awards whatsoever this year. In the past, several have brought home awards.

But I digress, as the new Big Brother on the block, I had almost forgot that "Apple knows best".

How do you feel about being tracked and information stored without your knowledge? Oh wait, it's ok, Uncle Stevie knows what's best.

Why would I really care, either way? What am I doing (or what's anyone doing) that is really *that* interesting to "big brother"? As long as no one messes with my credit (note: *all* of your creditors can access your credit record at any time, as well as bill collectors) it makes no difference.

Of course, if you just murdered someone or knocked off a bank, you might have cause for concern.

My iPhone is tracking me all the time and *possibly* sending that data back to Apple (except it isn't, see below.) Ok. SO WHAT?? Hey Apple, have fun tracking me doing the groceries and visiting grandma. Look, I'm heading to the dry cleaners! OMG! Really folks, as long as no one is recording you while you're taking a dump, your life won't change in any meaningful way.

Here's the reality of this non-issue:

Apple is not actually collecting this data, and this hidden file is neither new nor secret.

    Sorry.

iBeard, you're assuming that the only thing a larger screen is good for is movies/tv. With a 4" screen on the pod, you have a larger viewing area for more than movies/tv. You have it for games, pictures, chat(when available), text, better view of album artwork, and so on. It may not be for you because you may only use your pod for music, but you gotta admit there's a huge market for it.

Not again... The database in question is NOT used by Apple to actively track users. It's a local cache on your phone, sent to you from Apple. This database serves a legitimate purpose on your phone to improve the performance of location services.
The issue is that this DB can be used by others (not Apple) to gain in-site into your relative location over time. Technically I wouldn't even call this a 'bug' since it's working as designed. However it is a serious oversight on Apples part.

FTR - Apple does collect location data from your phone (assuming you opted-in). This tracking is done via entirely different process than is being discussed. active tracking means real time reporting, the data base is just to record it, they can say they erase the data base on your device but that does not mean they did not record it on their side, its like firefox says in their agreement, regardless of private browsing, the ISP can still record the traffic and know what websites and all you been looking at, search engines can even help them find words that match their desired character, whats strange to me is what this article says,

Too many people think they are entitled to get everything for free. No matter if it is a new service for $20 a year or if it is tethering they didn't pay for ... Don't know where people get it from that they should get everything for free (or cheap).

I didn't hear anyone saying they have the right to use free tethering, or that they are entitled to get it cheap.

Since when can't people complain about the price being too high anyways? And who on Earth would prefer to pay extra for tethering instead of getting it for "free". And note that I put free in quotes, because you're still paying for your data and bandwidth, so it's really never been free anyways. You're just paying twice for the same thing now, which is consuming bandwidth.

Last night I was watching a program called The Real King's Speech, a documentary on Prince Albert's/King George VI's struggle to deal with his speech impediment.

At least twice it was mentioned that he was born left-handed and forced by his father (with regression therapy perhaps?) to use his right hand.
Precisely, some of the side effects of forced change are learning disorders, dyslexia, stuttering and other speech disorders.

not me. the video was sooo hilarious. CES = the most prominent electronics show in the world with the MOST HIGH TECH tech you can find. and they allow for a 14.99 POS hack to ruin almost every booth.

HILARIOUS. i actually laughed out loud almost the whole video. childish yes. hilarious yes.

eye opening? yes. next year you can imagine there will be a few more companies that disable IR ports in public displays.

I'm sure you're not a journalism professional. I don't think the point of this should be whether it was funny or not. Fine, you found it funny, others didn't, that's the nature of jokes. The point is: the press observes. One cannot observe something without influencing it or changing it in some, at least, small way. But it is not the business of the press *to set about to* change or influence that which they observe.
